The U.S. is not a democracy – and it should stay that way

Posted by Rob Longenecker on 15th April 2009

We’re not a democracy, we’re a republic. In times like these, the distinction is important. Here’s an informative and thought-provoking short column by Walter Williams that invites you to consider the difference. Which do you want? Democracy or republic. Check it out.

Sometimes the simple solution is the best – a head shot.

Posted by Rob Longenecker on 14th April 2009

While many pontificating pundits were pronouncing their points of view on how to handle the pirates, the entire evolution was handled with a head shot – three to be exact.

I can’t tell you how many times while watching some TV cop drama where the bad guy is holding a gun to some pretty woman’s head, I yell at the TV, “shoot ‘em in the head, shoot ‘em in the head, you idiot!”  Yeah, real life is different from TV, I know. What you can do at the range, might be 4 times as hard when the adrenaline is pumping, but a head shot always seems a tempting way to save the day and save the life of the hostage.

Clearly, that was the solution off the coast of Somalia when the Seal snipers did what was called for, and did it as they had trained to do.

Sometimes a head shot is the simple solution.

Know any “right wing extremists?”

Posted by Rob Longenecker on 14th April 2009

The Department of Homeland Security is warning against “right wing extremists, especially U.S. Military veterans.

dhslogoThey cite the economic and political situation as causing a rise in anti-government sentiment.  Better watch out for those “extremists.”

They might be gun owners or former military people.

Man, it’s getting very nasty in Washington.

Here’s a link to the story.

Better than a light on your gun?

Posted by Rob Longenecker on 11th April 2009

I get many requests for us to build holsters for guns with lights attached. We make special versions of our Silent Thunder leather-lined holsters for some gun/light combinations, but usually for LEO’s or military use.

There are so many combinations of guns/lights/lasers that we don’t plan to keep up with all of them. In addition, for the average civilian, based on our own training and experience, we see a holstered firearm as a rapid-response, reactive tool. Lights and lasers might slow you down if you have no warning of an armed confrontation.

My training as a Naval Aviator, flight instructor, carrier pilot tells me to keep things simple.

I disagree with carrying a holstered gun with a light attached “just in case” because it complicates rapid response by adding in another decision to be made.

I know, you’re a grown-up and you’re going to do whatever you choose to do, and you have good reasons why you carry what you carry. So, we’ll disagree sometimes.

Here’s a tactical flashlight that has caught my attention. This may be a better choice than mounting a light on the accessory rails of your prized pistol for home defense.

One advantage is that you can illuminate the scene without pointing a loaded firearm at someone who may not be a threat.

Ain’t so

Posted by Rob Longenecker on 4th April 2009

You may have been hearing stories that 90% of the guns used in the Mexican drug wars have come from the U.S.

You may have heard that’s another reason to re-institute more restrictions on gun sales.

The story is just NOT TRUE. It ain’t so.

Fox News has this report.

Live your passion…

Posted by Rob Longenecker on 3rd April 2009

Every morning there’s a welcome message in my inbox from Ralph Marston. I don’t know if he can shoot, but he does have a way with words and ideas. His message comes in the form of the Daily Motivator.

There may be someone reading this for whom today’s message is the perfect one for them. If you have a couple of minutes, turn on your speakers, relax and enjoy the message. I have…several times. It’s about living your passion and feeling fully alive.
