Thin is in…but not as important as you might think.

Posted by Rob Longenecker on February 6th, 2007

“How thin is it?” “How thin is the leather?”  “How thin is the kydex?” “How thin is your Answer compared to the ……..?”

It makes perfect sense that you would consider how thin an IWB holster is, but it’s only a part of the mix of features and attributes of an IWB holster.

First, If you had a very thin IWB with a little more than 1/8″ total thickness (1/16″ on each side of your gun) that’s got to be about the thinnest you could get. Is it important?  Would it make your gun more concealable? It’s got to be more concealable, right? It’s not necessarily so.

There are many other factors that make a holster/gun combination concealable and the overall thickness is just one.  The ride height, the angle, the profile, the aspect ratio, the spread of the belt clips, the whole mix of factors makes a holster concealable or not.

Tucker’s Texas Heritage is just about 1/8″ thick on each side of your gun. The Answer is a little thicker than 1/8″ on the leather side and about 1/16″ on the Kydex side.

At the maximum these two holsters are 1/8″ thicker overall than the theoretical thinnest example I cited above and yet are thinner than many others you’ve tried.  It’s time to look at your ruler and see what 1/8″ looks like. It’s insignificant. Our proven design is what is significant.

I invite you not to be so concerned with what’s the thinnest because we repeatedly and frequently get emails and phone calls proving to us how much more concealable the Texas Heritage and Tucker Answer IWB’s are than what our customer was using before. Our customers love these holsters and our customers are just like you – picky, choosey, and committed to having the best. Some even started the process with a phone call asking “how thin?”

So, the next time you start thinking how thin a holster is, remember it’s just one of the elements that goes into overall holster design and you can absolutely count on superb concealability and comfort with the Texas Heritage or the Tucker Answer IWB’s.

Rob speaks the truth, my friends. I carry a full-size USP45 Tactical in a Texas Heritage just about every moment that I’m awake. The USP in the Texas Heritage conceals far better than my Kimber Ultra-Carry in my Uncle Mike’s IWB, which is as thin a holster as you can get without the gun tearing through the bottom. The Ultra-Carry is about half the size of the USP. It’s not the size of the fish, it’s the motion in the ocean.

Roger that~! Anything that can make a full-size 1911 disappear under a tucked t-shirt is all you need. I’m talking about my own, beloved Answer. I’ve turned a few friends onto this miracle and it’s consensus: There is absolutely nothing better (I would argue, as good…) than an Answer for stealth, all-day and “nap-test” comfort and lightning fast presentation.

Of course there is thinner. FIST makes an all kydex IWB that is micro-thin. It also collapses under belt tension and will crack over time. Blade-Tech, one of the two finest (comp-tac, being the other) all-kydex products out there, abandoned their thinnest kydex for these reasons and went slightly thicker for life-time durability.

I will stand and bow to this post because I can. With my Texas Heritage rig and a Kahr P45 I have complete mobility. I was surprised the first time I tried walking around with my shirt untucked opposed to tucked and a tight. The Texas Heritage allows me to work all day around people with full mobility and not holding up a sign that says, “Look what’s in my Pocket”!

Thin maybe in but give me mobility any day of the week.

I will leave the thickness and thinness and so on to the experts, I can only speak from my experience. I finally found and purchased the IWB “Answer” on 3/15/05, and it truly is the answer. Its so comfortable if I see a no concealed weapons sticker on a building I’m about to enter I have to feel with my hand to see if its there. When I ordered my answer Rob helped me get the right clips. The holster most ofter carries a sup-compact Springfield XD-40 and I love my holster. There is no better. Before going to tucker I had purchased others some were not necessarily that much cheaper they just didn’t work. There was always some problem with each of them, some trade off if you will. With the Answer I sacrifice nothing, its the total package, retention, comfort, deep concealment to presentation in seconds, hands down it is the best damn IWB holster money can buy at any price. And on another note if you potential customers are concerned about the extended lead time, don’t be it will be well worth the wait. Now having owned one I would prepay and wait 2 years if necessary, thats just how good these holsters are. Once you own one you will wonder how you ever got by without it, try it and see.
