I think people underestimate the usefullness of a shotgun for home defense. Get a good shotgun with a high-powered light on it. It's a gun, it's a club, it's a flashlight, and it's terribly intimidating. Also, you can get a whole plethora of less-lethal ammuntion for your 12 gauge. If you load one of those as a first round and do have to shoot an invader it's cause to believe that you're not some Die Hard wannabe waiting up at night to shoot interlopers. I think training everyone in the household in the use of any defensive firearm is a great idea, but I think what should really be emphasized during training is how to not shoot family members and loved ones accidentally. I've heard way too many stories about kids coming home late at night and being shot by their parents and all other variations on that theme. Also, if you put prickly bushes outside your windows it will greatly reduce the chances of someone slithering in them, even if that someone is you because you locked your keys in your house. Happened to me more than once. They really do make it hard to get in there.

The information listed is all good advice, and I have also been known to answer the door with a pistol hidden out of sight. But my A-1 1st line of defense is Clifford the Big Red Dog. Clifford is my Chow/Akita?/Rottweiler?/Chupacabra? mix-breed companion. I say he's the first line of defense because once the break in has occurred he'll more than likely be the first responder to the source of the disturbance. Unlike his "master" (sometimes I wonder who's really in charge), Clifford is fleet of foot, a light sleeper, and more alert immediately after being awakened by a strange noise. Now that I think about it, I guess I'd really be HIS backup if the proverbial you-know-what hits the fan!

They say that any dog is a good deterrent against break ins at home (and just who are "they", anyway? "They" seem to know an awful lot!), but I think it never hurts if the dog can also give a good account of himself in a fight. Fortunately for me, the only invaders who have had to face the wrath of the mighty Clifford have been of the four legged, garbage rooting variety. And after a few scrapes none have ever come back. I guess word has spread in the raccoon and possum underworld that there's a new sheriff in town...and he likes Snausages!
